Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis surgery is a surgical treatment for a spine curvature called scoliosis. Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways and can often begin in childhood or adolescence. Depending on the severity of the curvature, patients’ posture may be affected, there may be a marked curvature of the back and pain may occur.

Scoliosis surgery is performed to correct and stabilize the spine. Surgery is planned and performed according to the patient’s age, degree of curvature and other factors. Generally, surgery is considered when the degree of curvature exceeds 40-50 degrees and the patient’s growth is complete. Surgical options may vary according to different types of scoliosis, such as postural scoliosis and structural scoliosis.

Scoliosis surgery is usually performed with two main goals. The first is to correct the natural curvature of the spine and make it more straight. The second is to add metal implants (screws, rods or hooks) that will hold the spine properly and keep it stable. These implanted metal parts provide strong support for the spine and keep it in the desired position.

This surgical procedure is usually performed using open or closed procedures. Open surgery is a traditional surgical procedure in which an incision is made and the spine is directly accessed. Closed surgery is performed through smaller incisions using endoscopic techniques and provides access from the inside to straighten the spine. In both methods, the surgeon moves carefully to correct the curve and place the implants.

After scoliosis surgery, patients usually stay in the hospital for several days and participate in a physical therapy and rehabilitation program to heal the surgical site. In the post-surgical period, patients are given special exercises and physical therapy treatments to gradually heal their bodies and ensure the correct alignment of the spine.

Scoliosis surgery is an effective treatment option that significantly improves the quality of the life of patients. With this surgical method, the curvature of the spine is corrected, pain is reduced, posture is improved and patients can perform their daily activities more comfortably. When this surgical method is performed by experienced Orthopedics and Traumatology surgeons, it is possible to achieve successful results for patients. However, like any surgical procedure, scoliosis surgery may involve risks and should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Therefore, it is important for patients to evaluate and decide on the surgical option with a qualified doctor.
